Culture, Employment and Development in Academic Research Survey (CEDARS)
Are you a researcher, a PI, or a manager of researchers? Share your voice in CEDARS 2025!
It will run from 28 April to 30 May.
About CEDARS
CEDARS is a UK-wide survey conducted every two years to gather anonymous data on research culture, working conditions, career aspirations, and professional development opportunities for researchers.
Managed by , it is based on the Researcher Development Concordat and integrates questions from the previous Careers Research Online Survey (CROS) and Principal Investigators and Research Leaders Survey (PIRLS).
At Sussex, the results of this survey help shape improvements for early career researchers (ECRs) as part of the HR Excellence in Research action plan.
Who can respond?
CEDARS is open to early career researchers at Sussex, as well as Principal Investigators (PIs) and managers of researchers.
If you’re eligible, you will receive a direct invitation to participate.
At the start of the survey, you'll be asked to select the role that best fits you. To help us filter results for each audience, we will also ask whether you're responding as an ECR or PI/manager.
Why take part
By participating, you help us assess the researcher environment at Sussex, highlighting areas for improvement to foster a supportive and thriving research culture. Your input also contributes to national efforts to enhance research conditions, in line with the principles of the Concordat.
As a thank you, everyone who takes part in the survey will have the option to enter a draw to win one of three £150 cash prizes. To enter, add your email address when prompted at the end of the survey.
This information will only be used for the prize draw and will be deleted after the draw. All survey answers will remain anonymous, and your answers will not affect your chances of winning a prize. Three winners will be chosen at random after the close of the survey and notified by the end of June.
How to take part
Eligible researchers, PIs and managers of researchers will receive an email invitation from JISC Online Surveys containing a unique link to access the survey. Your link will also be included in reminder emails before you complete the survey.
The deadline for responses is 5pm on Friday 30 May.
